Meet The Chiefs
Chief James 'Big Jim' Bigheart
Born Pun-Kah-Wi-Tah-An-Kah in 1838 in Osage Mission, a village near St. Paul, Kansas, he fought for the Union side during the Civil War in the Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1865. Six feet tall, he worked as an interpreter and clerk at the Bureau of Indian Affairs before becoming active in Osage politics.
Highly educated and well-known for his wise leadership, Bigheart spoke seven languages and was a converted Catholic. He is best known for negotiating and holding up the signing of the 1906 Osage Allotment Act for 10 years until the Osage mineral rights were preserved. This negotiation lead to phenomenal wealth for the Osage who became the richest people per capita in the world at the time.

When Daddy was a boy, oil was discovered on Osage land, and overnight the tribe became rich. As a young girl growing up on the Osage reservation in Fairfax, Oklahoma, I felt my father owned the town. He had property everywhere. The local movie theater on Main Street, and the pool hall opposite, belonged to him. Our ten-room, terra-cotta-brick house stood high on a hill overlooking the reservation.
